Oh, Hollywood. If it wasn’t for screenwriters and directors with overly active imaginations, would any of us be sitting around even considering the possibility of there one day being flying cars, trains, or buses? Even television shows such as Doctor Who have a lot to answer for in that respect.
One of the biggest problems with looking to the future is that we will, inevitably, be disappointed. When man first landed on the moon in 1969, there was talk that humans would one day live there, and that we would soon be travelling to Mars and colonising other worlds.
As it stands right now, manned missions to the moon have not happened for years, although they are going to soon in preparation for a Mars mission, and commercial space flight is just about taking off – pardon the pun. Even the oft-asserted suggestion that “getting on an aeroplane will be as common as catching the bus” has not come to pass. Have we moved forward at all in terms of travel innovations?
Is there anything in the pipeline that will make a real difference both to our everyday travel, and when we want to scoot off to Greece on our summer holidays?
Flying Cars
If you have seen Back to the Future then you are probably in the group of people who are surprised that flying cars are not yet a regular feature of our skies. Fear not, however, for we do seem to be getting there! At the same time, do not get too excited, as it will be a while before you pack the family and suitcases in the car and fly off to the Mediterranean on your own.

There are currently Chinese and American models, the U.S version completed and available at $200,000. This is still more of an aeroplane though, really.
Still a long way to go, then! Unfortunately for those who would like to see flying cars, environmental initiatives are likely to be the future rather than mind-blowing, out of this world inventions.

Green Plane Travel
A far more likely innovation to happen will be the use of greener fuels in aeroplanes. At the moment, if you are a regular user on budget airlines, you probably feel a touch guilty when you fly off on a business trip or holiday and the cabin is only 50% full.
As well as greener fuels, NASA and Boeing are currently working on more efficient aircraft designs, which themselves look as though they have come straight from a movie script.

Eco Taxis
For places with a traffic problem caused by taxis – think New York City – then solar powered eco-taxis will save a lot of money as well as help the local environment. There are also plans for wireless technology to allow taxis to form a “train” when in a traffic jam, so the energy usage is reduced again.
While flying to Greece in your car still seems a long way off, at least we can embrace technology which will make the world greener and reduce carbon emissions.
Has anyone thought to ask George Lucas or Steven Spielberg about making flying cars?
