There have been some a lot of developments in home design over the last few years, and we’re getting ever-so-close to a fully automated house. Of course, as any sci-fi fan will tell you, all of these advancements, while convenient and enjoyable, can’t help but lead to the subjugation and control of all humankind. But at least our pets will be well cared for.
Self Aware

Do you know when your plumbing is leaking? Is it just when the mold starts creeping through the cracks that you first realize that something might be a little wrong? Think about how nice it would be if your home could monitor all of that for you. Then your home will send a nice, friendly text message to you and let you know that it would appreciate a little maintenance.
Of course, that’s all assuming it won’t just take care of the maintenance on its own. After all, it isn’t that hard for the home to know that it should shut off the water to prevent extra damage until the leak can be sealed. On top of that, we already have robotic vacuums. It won’t be that hard to design a robot that can maintain the pipes and vents along with the floor.
Automation Everywhere
Tired of all those little chores that you’re just sure someone else could be doing? Just let your house do it for you. You can always feed the dog, vacuum the floor, check the HVAC filters, and maintain a full refrigerator by setting up the routine on your computer and letting the house do the rest.
Control in the Palm of Your Hand

Is your home not behaving properly? You could always set it straight with a simple app on your smartphone. The homes of the future will all be controlled by a simple handheld device that delivers updates on the current status of the home (the security, the lighting, etc.), and let you set schedules, turn the lights on or off, and even get a view from any security cameras you may have.
Forgot to turn a light or power-sucking appliance off when you left for the day? Just pull up the schematic on your phone and ask your home if it would kindly take care of it for you. Is it time to reorder milk to re-stock the refrigerator? You house can send you a message and ask for your confirmation to make the order on your behalf.
Sustainable Designs

What is a home without the power to run all these devices and conveniences? Sustainable design is already becoming more and more prevalent and soon we’ll be able to take a home completely off the grid and manage everything with solar, wind, and geothermal power – which is good news when you think about it, because this way when the Artificial Intelligences rise up to take over the world, our homes won’t have to worry about pro-active go-getters cutting off their power from the city utilities.
It’s Going To Be the Future Soon

Fully automated homes are actually not that far away. We can already do most of it right now. Whether it’s setting the lights to automatically dim for romantic or scary movies, or creating a breakfast routine that will have the coffee and waffle maker working hard before we even wake up, our homes are getting smarter every day. We probably won’t have to worry about the robot rebellion any time soon, though, so for now you’re probably perfectly safe to turn control of your home over to some mechanical intelligence.
Probably.
